It was our wedding anniversary last week and we decided a week away would do us good, so we booked ourselves a cottage over in Hay on Wye (we stayed at a converted barn called The Peren which we would very highly recommend if anyone is looking for a lovely place to stay).
We always try to buy a joint gift to ourselves rather than buy each other anything as a surprise, not least because the inspiration for gifts starts to get a bit thin on the ground at this time of year...
Anyway, Tim had the idea of a slow cooker. We are always looking for ideas to make meal times more interesting, as, like many people I'm sure, we have a bit of a rota of favourites which we probably rely on far too heavily. Plus we have the added annoyance that I am a veggie and Tim most definitely isn't: the faff of making two meals / adapting one meal / just eating separately isn't to be underestimated.
A slow cooker seems to offer options. It will give fake meats the time to absorb some reasonable amounts of flavour from stocks and sauces and/or give us a great base to which we can add simple things (like meat) later.
Our first try was a spicy veggie sausage hotpot and worked brilliantly. It didn't last long enough for photos so you'll just have to trust me on this one. It's tarka dhal next. Mmmmmm
